AllOfMP3: an iTunes and P2P killer?
Russian music service AllOfMP3.com is back in the news. AllOfMP3.com released an iTunes-like client called, not coincidentally, allTunes. AllOfMP3.com already offers software called AllOfMP3 Explorer.
In a British survey AllOfMP3.com is now the second most used music service there after iTunes. This market penetration shows the huge success the site has achieved with its low cost downloads. AllOfMP3 charges by bandwidth. Songs typically cost from 10 to 25 cents and entire albums from 1 to 3 dollars.
AllOfMP3.com operates through a loophole in Russian law. It shows the inevitable collision between the real world and the Internet. Companies like AllOfMP3 can leverage a local advantage like licensing to offer a strongly competitive service worldwide.
IFPI and RIAA dispute the legality of AllOfMP3.com's service but have been unable to shut it down.
Consumers have long complained about current music services being too expensive and limiting. AllOfMP3's success shows there is strong demand for inexpensive music in unrestricted formats.
AllOfMP3 successfully competes with the high-end of the market by providing an iTunes-like experience at a better price with open formats. On the low-end AllOfMP3 is a superior alternative to P2P for popular music. Its modest fees are a small price to pay for legal, reliable, and immediate downloads.
