ASCAP, The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers, is one of the groups that collects royalties when music tracks are played in public places, on the radio, the like. They have also made a rather wild accusation as of late, one which reaks of them scrabbling for cash as they struggle through the present economic downturn. Supposedly now, ringtones constitute public performances of music tracks and thus should have an increased royalty charge upon them, a notion which to me just sounds outright idiotic!
We fully expect this one to be thrown out of court when it eventually gets brought up, much like most of ASCAP's other silly requests for more money.
