Starbucks Gets Back on Track with Artist Competition

Starbucks's recent full court press to sell Paul McCartney's new CD was disappointing. But the retain chain is aggressively continuing with new programs.

The McCartney blitz resulted in 160,000 CD sales its first week, according to by Nielsen Soundscan, to rank it number three on the sales chart. That's not a disaster. But it's hardly a success given all the publicity and play saturation in Starbucks 10,000 stores.

In its next move, Starbucks is starting a new artist competition. Starbucks Music Makers Competition will be similar to American Idol and start initially in the northeast U.S.
