Walmart Music Downloads

Walmart has made the decision to end its music downloads service as it found it was unable to compete with the likes of iTunes and Amazon. The online Walmart music downloads store is closing as of August 28th, 2011 after 8 years of operation, and all content in the store will be disabled as of this date.

Walmart had cut prices on MP3s to as low as 88 cents in an attempt to compete with iTunes which prices them at 99 cents. Walmart was even pricing catalog downloads at 74 cents per track, and it now plans to sell physical CDs only at its online website and brick and mortar stores. The Walmart Soundcheck streaming service will still remain operational online, however. The main reason for the failure of the download service was its inability to compete with the integrated iPod and iPhone service.
